THE READING TABLE : Thursday 15 April 2026
A supper club for book lovers and curious eaters
An evening of Japanese literature, sake and shared appetites. If you love reading, food, and Japanese culture, this night is made for you.
For this special edition of The Reading Table, we’re collaborating with The Sake Events Company to bring you an intimate evening inspired by Japanese storytelling, food rituals, and the sensual pleasures of reading.
Japanese authors have a delicious talent for using food in their writing - evocative, dark, tender, and deeply sensory. From The Gourmet Club by Jun’ichirō Tanizaki, to the cult hit Butter by Asako Yuzuki, and the warm, food-filled mysteries of The Kamogawa Food Detectives by Hisashi Kashiwai - these stories don’t just describe flavour, they create strong visualisations, salivation and possibly hallucinatory aromas. Or maybe that’s just me?
If you have a fabulous Japanese book you’d like to share, bring it along. Pair it with a curated sake flight and a grazing table created by The Sake Events Company in GULP’s intimate dining room.
There is no pressure to read aloud, and reading in silence isn’t the vibe we’re aiming for - instead we want to inspire shared interests, conversations and connections. We imagine The Reading Table as part reading group, part supper club, part cultural salon — a space for curiosity, generosity, and shared appetites.
£40 for Japanese grazing table and a flight of sake.
Please note: On this occasion, we cannot accommodate dietary requirements
