A little bit about me…

Hello, I’m Kaye Winwood, a Birmingham-based food and sensory artist with over 25 years’ experience spanning visual art, food, moving image and performance.

My practice invites audiences to engage with immersive sensory environments and objects, creating experiences that are both playful and thought-provoking. In Autumn 2021, I founded GULP—the first UK space dedicated to exploring food art histories and showcasing innovation in food and sensory design.

My work brings together sensory design, visual art and gastronomy to create meaningful, memorable eating experiences. In 2016, I coined the term Expanded Dining to describe this ‘beyond the plate’ approach—reimagining dining as a sensory playground, with food as an artistic medium.

Alongside my independent projects, I have produced work for organisations including Barbican, New Art Gallery Walsall, Flatpack Film Festival and Supersonic Festival. In 2019, I collaborated with Little Earthquake on Rocket Fuel, the showcase event for Moonfest, supported by Arts Council England, MAC and the University of Birmingham. I was also Producer for Ikon’s Slow Boat programme (2018–2020).

I was awarded a Feeney Fellowship in 2018 and have been a peer reviewer for the online journal FEAST since 2016. From 2016 to 2020, I was an Honorary Research Associate at the University of Birmingham.

I have lectured widely on experience and sensory design, and in 2017 led the School Dinners module at Birmingham City University.
