THE READING TABLE: Celebrating Five Years at the Table
A special 5th birthday edition celebrating food, stories and the rituals that bring us together
At GULP, we explore the world through the lens of food. The Reading Table is a gathering where books, ideas and food come together around a shared table.
Five years ago, opened GULP. It’s been a glorious struggle - terrifying and joyous in equal measure - but here we are still. So, this September, I’m invited you to gather around the table to celebrate.
For this special 5th birthday edition of The Reading Table, we explore the theme of CELEBRATIONS — the rituals, traditions and stories that surround the moments we choose to mark.
We invite you to bring literature in its widest sense, a book, poem, recipe, or memory that captures the act of celebrating: the cake, the beige buffet, the shared meal, the wake, the rituals and the details that make a gathering memorable.
Together, we’ll share extracts, stories and reflections around a grazing table inspired by celebrations, exploring the symbolism, traditions and food rituals that bring people together.
We’ll explore how celebrations are captured through literature, food writing and storytelling, from Elizabeth Day’s The Party, Nigella Lawson’s Feast: Food to Celebrate Life, to Edna Lewis’ The Taste of Country Cooking, exploring seasonal gatherings, feasting traditions, chosen family and the creation of new rituals.
Expect stories that explore celebration through different lenses, and the role of food in memory and community, the traditions we inherit, and the new traditions we create for ourselves.
Hosted in GULP’s intimate dining room, The Reading Table sits somewhere between a reading group, a supper club and a cultural salon — a space for curiosity, conversation and shared appetite.
There will be cake!
Places are limited.
£65 per person
Including drinks and an inspired grazing table.
