Join us for a Sound Walk as part of Sensing the JQ, a project by artist Kaye Winwood exploring the unique identity of Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter through the senses.
This special participatory experience is focused on sound, and invites you to slow down and encounter the JQ in a different way — through deep listening, observation, memory and conversation.
Beginning with a guided silent walk through the Jewellery Quarter, participants will move together quietly through the streets, tuning into the rhythms and overlooked sounds of the area. By removing the pressure to talk, the walk creates space to really notice the sounds and sensory layers that often pass us by in everyday life.
We will be joined by Paul Liam Walker, creator of ambient sounds and music inspired by noise and nature. Paul will bring a recording device to capture sounds, and participants are welcome to bring their own recorder or phone if they would like to record something they hear.
Following the walk, guests will gather at GULP for refreshments and informal discussion — an opportunity to share reflections, memories and observations together around the table.
Insights and sounds gathered through this and past/future workshops will contribute towards the development of a bespoke sensory dining experience at GULP in 2026, inspired by the sensory identity of Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter.
No prior experience is needed — just curiosity and a willingness to slow down and notice.
